For hiking enthusiasts, the trek to Yosemite’s Half Dome is a rite of passage — one that many hikers prepare for with training. Take the strenuous challenge on a full-day guided hike to the top of Yosemite National Park’s iconic landmark. Your expert Yosemite guide provides you with safety gear, and coaches you throughout the 12-hour day to make sure that you reach the summit safely. The physically challenging hike to the top of Half Dome is suitable for athletic adults who want to attempt this legendary trek that includes a hair-raising climb up a dizzying cable route.

IMPORTANT: Hikers must obtain a permit to hike Half Dome. The supplier may have a permit depending on time of departure. To apply for a permit yourself, the Half Dome Permit Application Process is from March 1–31, and done through recreation.gov.

Early in the morning, meet your expert guide at a trail head that is confirmed at the time of booking. Here, you receive a safety briefing and review the day’s schedule. Your journey to Half Dome is carefully organized so that you set a good pace on this strenuous 17-mile (27-km) trip.

Once you have received your orientation, lace up your hiking boots and hit the trail. As you hike, you’ll learn about the geology and natural history of Half Dome, Yosemite, and the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Along the way, soak up amazing views of Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls, Liberty Cap, Half Dome and the High Sierra as the trail rises 4,800 feet (1460m) from Yosemite Valley to the top of Half Dome.

The final section of the Half Dome ascent requires you to scale the mountainside for 400 feet (125m) using cables fastened into the steep rock face. Your guide shows you how to use your provided equipment before you climb the cable route. This part of the hike requires a permit that you must acquire before you reach Yosemite National Park. See Additional Info for instructions on how to obtain your permit, which is included in the price of this guided hike. You also have the option to sit out this final section; there is plenty of amazing scenery to enjoy, and your day will be amazing and challenging whether you reach the summit or not!

Upon completion of this epic adventure, you’ll be rewarded with the satisfaction of knowing you climbed Half Dome and learned new mountaineering skills. Return to the trail head to end your day, where you’ll receive a ‘Half Dome Summit Club’ patch to commemorate your achievement.

Please note: Hikers need to be in excellent physical condition and well-prepared for this challenging 12-hour trek. It's important that you are in shape prior to this trek, and you can consult your guide after booking on how to properly train. You must also be able to carry your own daypack (not included). It should be equipped with food, water, layered clothing, and a safety kit. Other necessities include a hat, sunblock and a flashlight. Detailed information on how to pack is provided on the voucher.

IMPORTANT: Hikers must obtain a permit to hike Half Dome. The supplier may have a permit depending on time of departure. To apply for a permit yourself, the Half Dome Permit Application Process is from March 1–31, and done through recreation.gov.

Trek alongside three major waterfalls in Yosemite National Park — Illilouette Fall, Nevada Fall and Vernal Fall — on this full-day guided hike. After a shuttle ride to Glacier Point, take in scenic views of Half Dome and other landmarks as you learn about the park’s natural features. Then embark on a moderately strenuous 8.5-mile journey on foot, descending more than 3,000 feet to the valley floor via the Panorama Trail and the Mist Trail. This tour operates from May to October and has a guide-to-client ratio of 1:6 to ensure personalized attention. Larger groups can also be accommodated.

Start your full-day tour at Yosemite Lodge, located across from Yosemite Falls, where you’ll meet your guides in the morning. From here, hop on a shuttle bus to Glacier Point and listen to informative narration about Yosemite National Park during the 1-hour ride.

Your hike begins at Glacier Point, where you are treated to iconic views of prominent landmarks such as Half Dome and Cloud’s Rest, as well as three waterfalls: Yosemite Falls, Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall. Your guides discuss the historical significance of the viewpoint and other park features while you have plenty of photo opportunities.

Then, follow a guide on foot along mostly downhill terrain that takes you on a scenic 8.5-mile (13.7-km) route with a total 3,179-foot (969-meter) elevation loss; you'll have breaks to refuel. Your first 1.5-mile (2.4-km) push descends 800 vertical feet (244 meters) in elevation to the top of the 370-foot (113-meter) Illilouette Fall, where you can catch your breath before continuing your hike.

The next 1 to 1.5 miles (1.6 to 2.4 km) takes your small group up a moderately strenuous section of switchbacks that ascend about 300 vertical feet (91 meters). Once the switchbacks are conquered, the trail flattens out for an easy and scenic 1 to 1.5 miles to the next junction — the Panorama Trail.

Running along this eastern point in the valley, the Panorama Trail offers postcard-worthy views that live up to its name. The following mile — a strenuous downhill series of 20 or so switchbacks — drops you 700 feet (213 meters) in elevation to the outflow of Nevada Fall.

After a lunch break atop the 594-foot (181-meter) waterfall, continue with your guides on one of two trails, depending on your group’s preference. A less strenuous 3.5-mile (5.6-km) trek down the John Muir Trail offers higher vantage points with views of Nevada and Vernal falls, as well as of Half Dome’s south face and the abrupt uprising of Liberty Cap. Or, opt for a slightly shorter route of 2.5 miles (4 km) down the granite staircases of the Mist Trail, which runs alongside the scenic Merced River and its 594-foot Nevada Fall and 317-foot (97-meter) Vernal Fall.

Both trails lead to restrooms and running water near the footbridge at the base of Vernal Fall. From here, it’s about a 1-mile downhill hike on a steep, paved trail to Happy Isles, where you catch a shuttle bus back to Yosemite Lodge before you bid farewell to your guides.
